I must admit, I was kinda in the inner circle of party politics several years ago until the previous GE11 when I decided to take it slow. Yet, I have been following the currently heaty political situation in our beloved country albeit with a pinch of concern. There seems much more of tongue-lashing nowadays, and people's emotions are being unnecessarily riled up. It wasn't as bad last time.
I know, some people might say politics is dirty, nothing is impossible in politics, or one can't take what politicians say to each other seriously. There's nothing to be so unduly concerned about.
Just that, I am worried because to me politics like what we are experiencing today has been much IQ and EQ, but zilch when it comes to SQ.
Yes, there are many muslim politicians in Malaysia. Many performs prayers without fail, fast in Ramadhan, pay tithes, go to Mekah for Hajj or Umrah - and many appear to champion Islamic issues. But spirituality does not mean just being rituous or defending against onslaughts to Islam in naivety.
I must qualify the above statement; there are actually politicians who are ritually disciplined and spiritually uplifted most of the time. Really though, they are an exception rather than a norm.
From my own experience, a seemingly religious person may actually be weak spiritually. One may have the "5" (Islam) and seemingly the "6" (Iman), but not necessarily the "1" (Ihsan). Prior to being introduced to ESQ 165 Training, I myself time and again forgot that Allah SWT my Creator Notices me all the time without fail.
Back to the politics.
Apparently politicians here (and elsewhere, but I am referring here to the Malaysian political scene) seem to be spiritually weak. I am particularly worried about muslim politicians most of whom carry the brand "perjuangan bangsa dan agama", because to the non-muslims they reflect what Islam and Islamic leadership is about.
Many unfortunately subscribe to nasty rules in engaging the "other side". Character-assassinate, look straight into the camera and angelically deny/ make accusations, never apologise even if you are proven mistaken, sow hatredness, jack up people's anger towards the opponents, be defensive by being offensive, are but a few so-called rules of political survival. The number of politicians who subscribe to these "principles" grow by leaps and bounds over the years.
Tellingly, people become more confused and deeply divided because of the way politics is being gamed in Malaysia today. Authorities seem to be out-of-control. Political mudslingings seem unending in parliament sittings, blogs and mainstream media, even within the same political divides. We hear smartly veiled racial undertones being used regularly. We are in danger of losing our civilisation and I blame the politicians for it, not because of their low IQ but because of their low SQ.
More genuinely worrying matters - such as the economic downturn in which thousands of jobs are lost and wealth are shrinking rapidly, social and safety erosions in which criminal/ illegal activities are at an all-time alarming figures, public health deterioration in which hundreds of lives were lost due to swine flu (H1N1) pandemic and dengue epidemic - seem to take a part-time role these days because politicians' seem to lose the nobleness and spirituality in their political pursuits.
If many politicians are weak spiritually and politics is handled with just intellectual and emotional capacity, what looms ahead is disaster. When SQ is low, politicians save the stronger ones might lack self-control and might easily become manipulative or manipulated.
The terms "answerable to the people" becomes a cliche because they know that all people - not just malays - forget after a while; that's human nature. (Humans are called "an-nas" in the Qor'an because "nas-iya" in Arabic means "being forgetful").
People in Malaysia are experiencing such political manipulations as we blog. Emotions run high on sensitive issues, many eventually die off after plenty of laypeople's energy wasted. Corruption becomes second nature. Lies and deceits are considered the norms. No amount of human laws, regulations and enforcement can safeguard such haywiredness.
To create a model civilisation coming out of our very own Malaysia, politics here must be redefined. The three elements of IQ, EQ and SQ must go hand-in-hand for every politician, muslims or non-muslims. Furthermore, SQ must be the central point of the three.
A spiritually-uplifted politician will become a strong leader for the nation, because he continuously is self-reminded of his intention in politics. He would tie everything he or she does "horizontally" to his or her "vertical" relationship.
The existence of spiritually-uplifted politicians of an overwhelming size will create a healthier political climate for Malaysia. When leaders truly realise that the Creator of the Universe is watching their slightest of actions, they become more wary before doing or saying something, whether in public or in private.
People become more informed, and political maturity can be seen in our society. If decision-makers and policy-makers know their spiritual standing, they would not hesitate to toe party lines if necessary for the sake of the people. They would prefer to listen to understand rather than become confrontational. They would ask their supporters to not become highly emotional. With all these scenarios, I am confident problems can be solved more effectively.
I wish one day all political leaders from both political divides will become ESQ alumni, experiencing character building through a spiritual upliftment journey led by Pak Ary Ginanjar and his able trainers, and recharging regularly.
It's actually one of the top items in my wishlist. :-)
